Who Do You Think You Are

In a prior article I wrongly said we were 99.9% nothing. Well, that’s not entirely true because all nothing is something, its just a something that isn’t easily understood. What I should have said is that we are is 99.9% emptiness. So what is this emptiness? Does it have a function? How come cells know when we are unhappy or ill? Is it in this emptiness where we actually become who we are or think how we feel? Is it in this absence of something that who you think you are forms each moment? Do we fill this emptiness with who we become? Where does our mind actually reside? Who are we? AM I ASKING TOO MANY QUESTIONS?

We often forget that all matter is energy and within us resides the same energy that runs the universe. Chi or Prana is intrinsic source energy that is inside each of us. We awaken this energy by diaphragmatic breathing (otherwise exercise wouldn’t energize us – it would just tire us out, which it does after a point.). We all breathe diaphragmatically when we sleep because it serves another purpose. Our diaphragm acts as a bellows and helps drain the lymph system (the bodies chemical sewer) and this happens to most animals in the state of sleep (watch your pets). When we know how to cultivate this energy we can use it very effectively. This is what Chi Gong and Tai Chi work with. I have seen a man take a flying kick to the stomach from another 14st man and he merely rocked back a little using Chi energy to protect his middle. A very impressive physical expression of the power of Chi. Tai Chi Chuan’s literal translation is Supreme (or Grand) Ultimate Fist and I have been reliably informed (by a Tai Chi-er) that the World Martial Arts competition ceased running because the Tai Chi guys kept winning. It’s pretty powerful stuff indeed.

Right, where we we – the universe and our part in it. All things are made of atoms and a molecule is simply 2 or more atoms working together (water= 2 hydrogen atoms and 1 oxygen atom for example). Molecules are very, very small. A sugar cube size of air contains 45 billion billion molecules. Atoms are also very durable. Millions of the atoms in each of our bodies have been to other stars. A billion of all our atoms were certainly in Shakespeare, Ceasar, Buddha and some nasty characters as well. Everything is made of atoms.

So who are we?

It can’t be what we are made of – our atoms, otherwise we’d all be able to write plays, live in complete peace and conquer foreign countries. Also, if we are what we are made of, how is it we are constantly changing physically and emotionally. That version really makes no sense at all. This is not a static reality. Our beliefs, physical state, values, preferences are constantly changing. So, it can only be our thoughts. We think ourselves, who we are, at every moment. We even say it, “I’m terrible with names”. “I’m the kind of person that …..”, and so on. Does this sound like an important statement? We can only be our thoughts…………. Some of you may bring up your feelings, but when you think about that you will agree that you usually give the meaning to your emotions. Every emotion is caused by a thought. Some of these reactions to thoughts are unconscious and happen even before you are aware of them (about a third of a second to be fairly precise).

So – back to this idea of who we are. Everything we see around us is made up of a collection of the smallest, most durable things that we have been able to identify (in this dimension). A half a million atoms lined up shoulder to shoulder (like in Riverdance) could hide behind a human hair. When we finish with our physical experience they will go on to become something and someone else. Whether we believe in science or religion or anything in between, there’s no escaping that the what of who we are is only with us proportionately for a very short time. An atom can live for 10,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000,000 years – or thereabouts, so we don’t have ownership of them for long.

Friends, this physical experience is simply that – an experience. The trials and tribulations, the ups and downs (love those metaphors, the idea that when you’re happy you’re in a higher place. Or rough and smooth for a more kinaesthetic one) and the musings and learnings and uniqueness and discovery and indulgences that make up each of us, are all a result of what we allow our minds to dwell on. What we think about ourselves.

So, what I want to say to you today is this, forget about the things that make you feel less than good. Forget about dwelling on your bad financial situation, dwell on how lovely it would be to go on holidays to that place (wherever) and to earn this much and so on. Take a couple of moments out from the stuff that is causing you emotional pain and visualize the opposite of that (the side you actually want) and generate the feeling of having it. Do it regularly – daily. Do it now….these are the actions that are needed, the actions of directed thought. This is how you’ll get the life you want. Giving yourself the time and the permission to believe in and see and work on a wonderful life will bring that one to you. It has to be. Dwelling on all the bad stuff certainly isn’t bringing you happiness!

Stop working on what you think is real and work on thinking about what you want to be real…..and feel it.

Police Story [VHS]

This classic Jackie Chan picture opens with one of the wildest police action set pieces ever filmed, an extended chase that includes the total destruction of a hillside shanty settlement, as fleeing crooks and pursing cops crash down through it with their vehicles. Overall, however, the picture is an awkward mixture of clashing elements. At first it is a little strange seeing Chan playing it (most…
